Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a revolutionary new treatment for skin abnormalities, scarring and rejuvenation. PRP dates back in medicine to 1990 when it was used as a “surgical glue” to seal difficult incisions. Since then, it has found applications in oral surgery, orthopedics (especially Sports Medicine), wound care and now aesthetic medicine.

PRP is blood plasma that contains a concentrated source of the patient’s own platelets. The platelets then undergo an activation process that induces the release of growth factors (ILGF-1 &2, IL-8, TGF-β, etc.) and cytokines that initiate and organize growing tissue, allow for repair of damaged tissue and stimulate the creation of new blood vessels, all of which are responsible for the aesthetic results we seek.

In humans, the baseline blood platelet count is +/- 200,000 per μL, in comparison with therapeutic PRP concentrations are 5x more with some variability based upon equipment, harvesting and technique. As there is significant inter-individual variability in the platelet concentration of human plasma, more is not necessarily better.

Procedure

PRP can be delivered to the area to be treated in many different ways and using different techniques. It depends mainly on the area, the type of problem being treated and if it is being used in combination with other treatments.
